Profile

TWI is one of Europe's largest independent research and technology organisations. Based at Abington near Cambridge since 1946, TWI provides those in industry with technical support in welding, NDT and associated material joining technologies. TWI has over 3000 world wide industrial members across a range of industries that includes railway industries. TWI is currently participating in 40 European projects (taking the lead in 25) with 24 of those being in the NDT field (taking the lead in 20). The projects include Research for the Benefit of SMEs, Cooperative and large integrated projects. TWI has two main NDT Research Centres based at Abington, Cambridge and Port Talbot, South Wales. These centres cover the broad spectrum of NDT development for single client contracts, joint industry sponsored projects, UK TSB projects and EC funded projects. TWI is also the lead organisation in the Institute of Rail Welding with contacts in rail welding throughout Europe.

Participation

TWI will assume the contractual role of Project Co-ordinator in the management Work Package (WP9). The SMEs believe that the past experience of TWI will aid the smooth running of the project. In addition, TWI will have a high degree of involvement in the research tasks by having significant roles in following WPs:
  • WP1. Design of test samples containing representative defects and development of functional specification for the equipment and techniques
  • WP2. Fatigue tests of welds and assistance with ECA
  • WP3. Assistance with Ultrasonic Modelling and system detailed concept
  • WP4. Assistance with Ultrasonic design of system and phased array probes
  • WP5. System mechanical design and manufacture
  • WP6. Assistance with linking physical acceptance criteria and ultrasonic signals
  • WP7. Laboratory Trials and presence at Field Trials
  • WP8. Input into dissemination and exploitation of results in support of all SMEs
