Profile

The Centre for Railway Research - NewRail, is based at Newcastle University. It runs a range of innovative research projects in Europe and the UK, with strong links to Japan and Australia. The aim of the research centre is to develop and maintain the highest international standards of excellence in rail-related research.

NewRail has expertise in infrastructure and rail-wheel contact, freight and logistics, materials and structures, and rail systems. In addition to its base at Newcastle University, NewRail has a test site near Chesterfield in Derbyshire with a 1km long rail track on which rail vehicles can be run for large scale experimental work. Research funding comes from a range of sources including the European Commission, UK Research Councils, and industrial partners.

Participation

NewRail will supply standards and literature information for all the participants, and will supply detailed rail knowledge ECA to IKH for the software comparison of ultrasonic indications and physical acceptance criteria. It will also make available a safe site location for experimental work in realistic conditions.
